Buying an electric car in Australia in 2026 is a different decision from a few years ago. Battery electric vehicles reached around a fifth of new car sales in May 2026, used EVs are arriving in volume, and the charging network keeps growing. What home charging costs
Most EV charging happens at home overnight. A dedicated 7kW wall charger adds roughly 40km of range an hour and typically costs around 1,100 to 2,400 dollars installed, depending on your switchboard and cable run. If you have solar, a solar-aware charger can route surplus generation into the car and bring your daytime charging cost close to zero. A standard wall socket works in a pinch but only adds about 12 to 15km an hour.
EV running costs versus petrol
Charged at home, a mid-size EV costs roughly 4 to 7 cents per kilometre, dropping to the low end on an off-peak tariff. A petrol car using 7.5 litres per 100km is closer to 14 cents per kilometre. Over 15,000km a year that is a meaningful saving on fuel alone, before lower servicing costs. Public fast charging costs more per kilowatt hour, so the gap is largest for people who mostly charge at home.
Incentives still active in 2026
Most state cash rebates have closed. The standout remaining incentive is the federal fringe benefits tax exemption for eligible battery electric cars bought through a novated lease, which can save employed buyers thousands a year and runs in full until March 2027. The Northern Territory still offers free registration for EVs to mid 2027, and some states offer concessional stamp duty. Confirm the current detail with your state revenue office. Real-world range in Australian conditions
The WLTP figure on the sticker is measured at 23 degrees, so expect about 10 to 20 percent less in normal use. Cold snaps in the south can cut range further because the car heats the cabin from the battery, while hot weather trims a smaller amount through air conditioning. Preconditioning the cabin while still plugged in, and a heat pump where fitted, both help. For most commuting and suburban driving, even a modest real-world range is plenty.
